Steve Benson, editorial cartoonist forThe Arizona Republic,was born in Sacramento, Calif. on Jan. 2, 1954.
As a teen-ager, he graduated from the famous "Draw-This-Dog-on-the-
Back-of-a-Matchbook -Cover" Art Instruction Schools Correspondence School of Minneapolis, Minn.
In 1979, Benson graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor's degree in political science from Brigham Young University.
He became editorial cartoonist forThe Arizona Republicin 1981 through 1989, worked as a editorial cartoonist for theTacoma Morning News Tribunefrom 1990-1991, then returned to theRepublicin 1991.
He won the coveted Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning in 1993 and has been a four-time finalist for the same award. His cartoons have brought numerous first
place accolades from Arizona Press Club, Best of the West and the Headliner Awards, a Rocky Mountain Emmy and - Benson's personal favorite - The "Parched Cow Skull" award from the state Office of Tourism for "The Least Positive Contribution to Arizona Tourism." (For his snowbirds cartoons.)
